Canine Range Work

Often times, Schutzhund dog selection brings the prospective handler/trainer and dog to the shooting range. Here the dogs will be exposed to extreme auditory stimuli and subsequent responses will be graded. The ideal dog will show neither aggression or fear, but instead curiosity and attentiveness will be observed. Many dogs upon first exposure will be non-plussed by these types of stimulus. Others may at first scurry for cover or even try to hide behind the handler/trainer.

The images below show Bosco and Blaze as they engage in these exerises. Bosco was initially non-plussed by actual gunshots on the range as small and large caliber weapons were fired. These weapons were the 9mm pistol, 40 caliber pistol, M4 assault rifle, and 50 caliber rifle. Throughout Bosco's training, we have had to reinforce him in these areas as he seems to be more sensative to small arms fire. Blaze showed initial fear but did remarkeably well on the range during her first exercise which is depicted below.

Our newest litters available for military and law enforcement placement are being trained in bomb detection, explosive scent discrimination and IED finding.
