Bait Tracking
We use many different techniques and supplies such as smelly bait food as bait for footstep tracking work. We kept our dogs hungry by not feeding them before morning work. Hungry dogs tend to be the hardest working dogs. As you can see in the images below, we placed a can of smelly bait partially open in front of the kennel to tease and build drive. Eventually, the subject's odor will take the can and a portion of food and lay tracks as the dogs learned what the game was and subsequently what was expected of them.

The most common method we used involved placing bait in a triangular "scent pad" formation and then placing bait into the subject's subsequent footsteps. This will allow the dog to keep the nose down into the track and help reduce head sway and potential for air-scenting. This is desireable for Schutzhund work. The dog's learned through Pavlovian theory that they were rewarded in various ways for following a scent. This is how we touight them this game.

We illustrate below Tracking and Searching Exercises in the months that follow. Please be sure to check back frequently. We will frequently switch from food bait to differeing targets such as Distressed person scent, garmets and articles (underwear are superb!), cadaver parts, explosives and muntions, Pseudo Cadaver Scents, Pseudo-IED/Explosives, Pseudo-Narcs, animal remains, blood, etc.
